Welcome to CrushContracts' Souls Behind the SaaS series. My mission is to bring forward the humanity behind some of our favorite software as a service (SaaS) solutions.
This series has been a dream for a while. I have been observing high levels of generosity, intellect, and excitement in the legal technology industry over the last few years and I credit the exceptional humans in our industry driving that positivity. I am impressed and inspired by the people behind the products. The souls behind the SaaS. They are promulgators of innovation in the legal technology industry, yet largely unknown. It is time you meet them.
We start with the musical malbec enthusiasts, Matt Patel and Hemanth Puttaswamy, co-founders of Malbek, a sophisticated contract lifecycle management SaaS.
I recently spoke at Malbek's first customer conference, Envision, in Nashville, Tennessee. Music and good vibes were flowing from every direction, and everyone at Malbek rolled out the red carpet for all of the attendees. The experience was heartwarming and eye opening. The people behind Malbek's creation and success are brilliant, kind, and dedicated. They make an extraordinary team united by their passion for excellence, efficiency, and fun, led by two humble and extremely talented men.
In the obnoxious ‘tech bro’ culture of the technology world, Malbek co-founders, Hemanth Puttaswamy, Matt Patel, and Madhu Poolu generate a rare brotherly benevolence for everyone in the industry, including their competitors. Anyone who has interacted with them knows how generous they are with their time and advice while asking nothing in return. You will never sense ego or vanity in how they treat their team members, customers, vendors, friends, and competitors. I am grateful that these anti-‘tech bro’ brothers have joined our legal tech industry and making it better.
Hemanth Puttaswamy and Matt Patel started Malbek with a vision to improve contracts technology for Fortune 500 companies, and created a sophisticated and intuitive product that delivers what it promises, and then some. They hire the best people on this planet to work on their dream together, and we have the privilege of knowing some of them. It is my hope that by the end of this article, you know more of them and connect with them on LinkedIn.
Colin Levy is Malbek’s Director of Legal and Evangelist, and a published author, speaker, and legal technology maven. He is a global favorite for his contributions to the legal tech movement. Colin’s work, individuality, and brand are celebrated by Malbek. Unlike most companies who ensure employee identity and brand does not outshine theirs, Malbek puts a spotlight on their team members and amplifies their voices.
I met so many fantastic Malbekians in Nashville and they filled my soul with good vibes. Leslie Broadbent, Lizzy Painter, Stacey Cimino, Heather West, Kari Geske, Dennis Malaspina, Ed Breault, Jaime Slocum, Hannah Walch, Jake Barrett, Jonnie Castorino, Jodi Kochenour, Brian Dillon, Lou Ruedebusch, Anneliese Strout, Ben Willis, Casey Ryan, James Misterman, Brian McNees, Anne More, Matt Patel, and Hemanth Puthaswamy worked in synchronized harmony creating a once in a lifetime experience for all. Listening to the legendary Kenny Aronoff busting out so many all time hits on his drums at their Envision conference, was unbelievable! The entire Malbek’s team were committed to creating this extraordinary moment, and did it very gracefully.
Malbek’s unique look and functionality is a result of the unique style and personalities of the founders, and team members. They collaborate, wear multiple hats, sing, and dance as they nurture their beloved company towards success. Whether designing a Malbek feature, or playing the guitar, Hemanth does it in style. Matt, Dennis, and Lou will entertain you with their stories, outlast everyone at the party, and watch out for you when you head home. Ed, Lizzy, Stacey, Kari, and Anne are the forces behind Malbek’s brand. Leslie is the top enabler of ideas and actions at Malbek. What a dream team!
Malbek clients and industry partners will attest to the respect, dedication, and generosity delivered by the entire Malbek team at all times. Even though their product is built for Fortune 500 companies, Malbek treats every interested client with great attention and patience. Malbek will happily refer a prospect to their competitor, instead of pressuring or guilting them. This is why some of the biggest companies in the US rely on Malbek and its team for their contract execution, management, and innovation.
Malbek represents the best of America. Founded by immigrants, empowered by industry experts, and run by diversity of thought to keep the American dream alive. You can’t help but celebrate this wine inspired company building a better culture in the legal tech industry. Next time you sip some malbec, or see a Malbek team member, say hi. As I said, they will fill your soul with good vibes.
